New Zealand Scholarships

June 14, 2008

Education is of critical importance to NZAID’s aim of achieving a safe and just world free of poverty. As part of its education strategy, NZAID provides scholarships to citizens of some developing countries to undertake vocational training or tertiary level study in their home country, in New Zealand or in the Pacific region.

The purpose of NZAID’s scholarships schemes is to enhance the skills, training and knowledge of selected individuals and thereby build capacity to contribute to the sustainable development of key areas in their home country. By awarding scholarships in areas where NZAID has committed funding, such as education, health, growth and livelihoods, leadership and governance, and economic development, these scholarships can contribute to NZAID’s mandate of poverty elimination.

To achieve this, NZAID awardees are required to return to their home country on completion of their scholarship to contribute to the development of their country through positions in government, civil society or private sector organisations.

The New Zealand Government offers the following scholarships to candidates of selected developing countries:

Development scholarships

The New Zealand Development Scholarships (NZDS) scheme offers the opportunity to people from selected developing countries to undertake development-related studies in New Zealand.

This may include study related to education, health, rural livelihoods, governance, human rights, or economic development, depending on the human resource development training needs of the home government.

New Zealand -Development Scholarships are offered for full-time, tertiary level study at participating New Zealand education institutions.

Short Term Training Awards

A wide range of short-term vocational and/or skills courses or work attachments within New Zealand are offered (duration may be up to one year).

The Short Term Training Awards cover payment of fees, return economy air fares, an establishment grant, a basic living allowance and provision for health care. Costs and allowances are paid through a management services consultant.

Disclaimer: The STTA scheme, including country eligibility, is subject to ongoing review and amendment. Applicants should check their eligibility prior to lodging an application. NZAID reserves the right to reject any application, before it has been fully processed, in the event of country eligibility changes.

Commonwealth Scholarships

Opportunities exist for candidates from some developing Commonwealth countries to undertake full-time postgraduate study or research at a New Zealand university. Approximately 10 new Commonwealth Scholarships are awarded each year by the New Zealand Government.

Funding for these Commonwealth Scholarships is provided by New Zealand’s International Aid and Development Agency (NZAID). They are administered by the New Zealand Vice-Chancellors’ Committee.

As with other NZAID-funded scholarships, Commonwealth Scholarships play an important role in addressing the human resource development needs of developing countries. The scholarships are awarded to candidates of strong academic merit who are expected to make a significant contribution to the development of their home country following completion of their scholarship. By building capacity in key sectors, Commonwealth Scholarships can contribute to NZAID’s mandate of poverty elimination.

Levels of study: Commonwealth Scholarships for candidates from developing countries to study in New Zealand are available at Masters or doctoral level. For Masters degrees, the scholarships are tenable for up to two years. For doctorates, the maximum scholarship length is four years. Candidates are required to study/research full-time.

Fields of study: Commonwealth Scholarships are available in all disciplines, but preference will be given to candidates who nominate fields of study relevant to the development of their home country. This may include study in, for example: health, basic education, sustainable rural livelihoods (including agriculture, forestry, veterinary science etc), environment, human rights and gender, leadership and governance, economic development, peace building and conflict prevention, public sector governance and reform, and community development.

The Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowships Plan (CSFP) website has further information on Commonwealth Scholarships, including nominating agencies’ contact details for application enquiries.

New Zealand Regional Development Scholarships (for countries in the Pacific region).

NZAID scholarships play an important role in addressing identified human resource training needs of developing partner countries with which New Zealand has significant ties. By building capacity in key development sectors, NZAID scholarships can contribute to NZAID’s mandate of poverty elimination.

New Zealand Regional Development Scholarships (NZRDS) enable individuals from selected developing countries in the Pacific to undertake studies at tertiary education institutions in the Pacific region. The scholarships are available for full-time, multi-year study at undergraduate or postgraduate level.

The purpose of the NZRDS scheme is for Pacific Islanders to gain knowledge and skills in priority fields of study so that they can directly contribute to the sustainable development of key sectors in their home country. NZRDS candidates are required to return to their home country for two years following the completion of their scholarship to apply their new skills and knowledge towards this purpose.

The NZRDS scheme is funded through the New Zealand Government’s Official Development Assistance programme and is administered by NZAID.

NZAID scholarships schemes, including the country eligibility for each scheme, are subject to ongoing review and amendment. Applicants should check their eligibility prior to submitting an application. NZAID reserves the right to decline any application before it has been fully processed, in the event of eligibility changes.
