Researching study opportunities in NZ

November 2, 2008

I’m burned out. I’m looking for a brand new start. As I contemplated my future while staring at my cream ceiling (after some minutes later) I thought that maybe studying in a different country is the thing I’m looking for. Sight, taste, smell, culture…fresh and novel for me.  I’m that impulsive (so sue me!)

I turned on my PC. Clicked on some key words and saw the Study in New Zealand website and became curious. I’ve always been fascinated with other cultures. New Zealand is no exemption. Simple answers to every query can be seen on this site.

Process on visiting, studying, working, living, and investing on New Zealand are posted and can be easily navigated. The steps are easy to follow.

Since I really want to Study in New Zealand I must look for an offer of a place from the local education provider, the length of courses (they have different requirements depending on the length of stay), the study opportunities and what studying or just visiting might entail me as an international citizen.

New Zealand. Just saying the name makes me giddy with anticipation. Now all I have to do is to ask my stern mom’s permission.  (Keep my fingers crossed!)

New Zealand has long been known as a famous tourist destination, not only because of its amazing landscapes, lush nature, mild and temperate environment, but also as educational destination. Anyone is welcome to study here.

The educational standards are outstanding. The requirements will take fairly 4-12 weeks so better check out the best time when you would like to visit and study. Depending on the nature and status of your application, New Zealand is very compliant and accepting to foreign students.

Exciting prospects lie ahead when you graduate here! The conducive environment is a fresh welcome to many foreign students who trust us to deliver the best for them. We are very well-known to take very good care of our students and visitors.

Take in the pleasure of being here where it’s safe, welcoming and inviting. No doubt the time and money (which are fairly competitive to other countries) will be very well spent here.

An overseas student in NZ

November 2, 2008

(Breathing deeply) Home sweet home!

As I unloaded my luggage, I can still remember my wonderful sojourn to a land so foreign and unknown (that is why I can’t NOT forget it) As if it was yesterday when I took a hesitant step into my host family’s home.  I saw the ad on the Study in New Zealand website and my life took a dramatic turn.

I learned the essential basics. The info was helpful. Basically, studying in New Zealand (just like any form of process overseas) had some technicalities but it’s no brain surgery, which I can assure you.

Since I’m taking up a course less than three months, I will only need a New Zealand Visitor Visa instead of Student Visa or Permit because that requires studying for more than three months.

Personally, I think this step is better and easier than obtaining and going through numerous processes but it’s really up to you if you want to be a full-fledged student and explore the country, ultimately it’s your choice. But there are some glitches in studying for that very short duration. I can’t work (earn money while studying) and I have to make sure that not more than the stated days shall I stay.

Three-month stay in a foreign land made me a different (and I believe a better person). The course was definitely intense and concentrated. I had some time to explore the country (but not so much as I wanted to). New Zealand is breath taking.

So my inner explorer and traveler were squashed. I had to take the course because I want  to see other countries and learn simultaneously too.

But if given a chance to study there again, I would jump at the chance! Heck! Who wouldn’t?

Exchange student in New Zealand

November 2, 2008

Last year I went to study in New Zealand. I was an exchange student and wouldn’t trade it for anything else.  New Zealand is mainly famous for Biotechnology, Forensics Science and Marine Engineering.

This site took me on a journey like no other: Study in New Zealand

I was an exchange student, lived under the roof of my host family. It’s quite easy to adjust with the  cosmopolitan society. My initial nervousness and hesitation gone, I forged on to study here.

I made loads of friends. I learned easily enough, the programs are intense yet I still enjoyed every lesson. My whole learning experience was tough but exciting too. My host family and I are still communicating; they made my stay (even just for a very short three-month period) nice and happy.

I wouldn’t trade what I had there. Every experience (good or bad) was worth it.

New Zealand from a Student Perspective

November 2, 2008

Mmmm…delicious! Licking my fingers, I devoured another delectable pastry. Literally almost any street has a small bakery of sorts. (I’m in carbohydrate, sugary heaven!) I particularly liked Pavlova, which incidentally was named after a famous Russian ballerina. It’s a dessert made of meringue, whipped cream and topped with kiwi fruit.

Delightful! I gained some so-so pounds. But I didn’t really care. I vowed that I will taste and savor any dish, fruit, dessert there are!

I came to study in New Zealand a few days ago, but I fell in love with everything almost at once.  I came to study initially, but every trip I made outside the university was greeted with gastronomic and sight-seeing delights. I compare it as being in a spa all day; I can take refuge anytime with the beautiful post-card worthy surroundings and indulge with delicious culinary offerings.

But aside from all that, New Zealand has world-renowned educational excellence. That’s why I chose to be here. Basically, there are universities that are known from a certain specialized course like in Auckland, the top university that offers and is famous for Applied Humanities. You can literally search at your fingertips the universities that you like to attend.

I, on the other hand, enrolled in AUT IH’s Health & Environmental Sciences. Being one with nature, it’s not hard to be immersed on it. The strict standards ensured that on my first day I was in the same English standards with my fellow students which I preferred; at least I would be more comfortable.

New Zealand has become the popular destination for most students looking for finest education. I just clicked on this link: http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/study/canistudyinnewzealand/

There were some things you have to keep in mind though. If you plan to stay for more than three months, secure a Student Permit Visa, pass the health requirements, and clear citizenship. It’s also practical to research first on the course you desire to take, and from there check out the best university that specializes in that area.

Also see if they can offer FREE scholarship. (Currently there are Up to 100 doctoral and 100 undergraduate students currently studying under the scholarship programs) Most of them are very willing to help you out in finding and securing places for you to stay. Many offer cost-friendly inns or dormitories (if you uncertain to stay in a local home).

I am sure that you would fall in love (just as I did) and maybe stay here for good.

Student Experience in NZ

November 2, 2008

“I hope I can come back soon. Will terribly miss you!”

This is the last line of the letter I left, posted at my host family’s fridge door. It’s true. I will. Because they were good. They treated me like their daughter.  It’s a blessing when I saw this site about studying in a foreign land.

New Zealand is indeed foreign to me. But once I was there, I felt right at home. Maybe it was the bountiful, glorious nature that surrounded me, foods that never felt alien to my unadventurous tongue or the people who live here.

I came to New Zealand to study. After all, New Zealand is famous for providing excellent education.  There are numerous schools to choose from. All of them are international standard. And New Zealand is a fairly safe place so it’s a no-brainer.

I stayed for only three months but I learned tons. Even though I only attended short-course program, I am certain that everything I was taught was usable. The intense program made me fully concentrate and also appreciate every free time I had with my host family.

Such a short stint did not stop me from exploring the breathtaking sceneries around me, the museums and shops.

Everything I heard and seen before I went there was nothing compared to what I personally experienced. Since I did not have to worry much about my travel papers, (it’s unfussy and easy to obtain permits anyway). And since my stay is short, it’s as if I just took a break and hang around in my aunt’s apartment. (Note: There is an existing law that other foreign citizens have equal term of citizen rights with New Zealand’s natives, so you better look that one up).

One helpful site  for me is Study in New Zealand

Homestay in New Zealand

November 2, 2008

I received another e-mail from my host family in New Zealand. It has only been 2 months. My eyes welled up. Of course, I commit to memory everything that happened there. Saw my old pics with my lovely host family, reminded of the silly things I did (with or without them).

I was in New Zealand for two years and stayed with a great Homestay family. What an experience. I have never been out of the country. It was a first in everything. I studied in Auckland University of Technology. Far from home, everyday was a learning experience. People were nice, warm and friendly. The weather was generally good.

I thought that New Zealand had tamer client but most said that I should have a bottle of sun block at hand to avoid being burned!

I’m usually out exploring the beautiful mountainsides and coastlines (with my host family of course) whenever I had free time. It was simply grand! Everything’s beautiful.

It was fairly easy to come there and study. After a few clicks on www.StudyinNewZealand.com and some inquiries, I finally made it to New Zealand! I didn’t feel out of place there are lots of foreigners like me. And my host family made me feel at home.

Stunning sights and people there all made a difference.
